Prof. Dr. Sibel KARAKELLE

Dr. Sibel KARAKELLE is currently Faculty Member of the Division of Music Education and Dean of Faculty of Education at the Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in Burdur, Turkey. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at Gazi University (Turkey), her Master’s degree in music education (emphasized in piano pedagogy) at the University of Oklahoma (USA), and her Ph.D. degree in sociology of music education at North Texas University. A specialist in music science, Dr. KARAKELLE teaches methods courses and supervises student teachers at the undergraduate level, and teaches comparative music education, socilogy of music, and psychology of music courses at the graduate level. In her research, She has concentrated on music in its various social contexts, combining a number of macro and micro sociological perspectives on music and its education. She is an active clinician and researcher, and she has presented many sessions at national and international conferences. Dr. KARAKELLE has been published in research journals, and serves on state and international research journal review boards.

She participated in in national and international projects: contributed to Akdeniz University EU project as ‘expert’, Süleyman Demirel University BAKA project as ‘advisor’, Yeşilbaşköy Office of Mayor’s BAKA project as ‘Assistant Project Coordinator’. She was also editor and referee of national and international journals. She continued her academic studies as ‘Research Faculty’ in Sibelius Academy and Helsinki University (Finland) in 2012. Having contributed to academic studies, national and international symposiums, courses and workshops of Music Science and visited 58 countries, Dr KARAKELLE published an international book called “Dialectic of Centralization: A Sociological Examination of Music Teacher Training Programs of Selected Countries”. She also wrote chapters for ‘Internationalisation’ and ‘Employability’ within ‘Bologna Process and Türkiye: European Higher Education Field’. She edited ‘Pedagogical Approaches to Piano Education’. Her international book projects ‘Introduction to Musicology’ and ‘The Lives Behind the Sounds’ are in press.   

She is also a member of Music Educators’ Association in Turkey (MÜZED), Research Alliance of Institues for Music Education (RAIME), International Society for Music Education (ISME) ve International Musicological Society (IMS).
